Area code 931 was first put into service on January 1, 1998. It originally served the entire Middle Tennessee region, including the Nashville metropolitan area. However, over time, as the population of the Nashville area grew, the 931 area code began to experience problems with overlays and number shortages. In order to relieve some of the pressure on 931, area code 615 was split off from 931 on February 1, 2001. This left 931 with just the rural areas of Middle Tennessee.

In response to the continued growth of the Nashville area, area code 615 was split again on June 1, 2006. This time, the 615 Spliting left 931 with just the rural areas of Sumner County, Robertson County, and Cheatham County.

Despite the fact that 931 is now a largely rural area code, it is still in high demand due to the lack of available prefixes in 615 and 629. As a result, 931 is expected to continue to experience shortages and overlays in the years to come.

Area code 931 is one of the original 86 area codes created by AT&T and the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) in 1947. It serves the eastern portion of Tennessee, including the Nashville metropolitan area.The 931 area code was originally assigned to the entire eastern third of the state, but has been subdivided numerous times as the population has grown. These days, 931 is largely restricted to the Nashville area, with a few small exceptions.

The 931 area code is scheduled to be replaced by a new area code in 2019. Until then, it remains in use throughout its service area.
