Area code 918 was created on October 1, 1997, and covered the northeastern corner of Oklahoma. It was Oklahoma's first new area code in 22 years. The 918 code was created to meet the increasing demand for telephone numbers in northeastern Oklahoma. The 918 code is named for the Tulsa metropolitan area, which is the largest city in the area and the center of the 918 code. The Tulsa metropolitan area is also the 47th largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The 918 code has seen several expansions since its creation. In 2000, the 918 code was expanded to include the eastern half of Oklahoma. In 2008, the 918 code was expanded to include the western half of Oklahoma. In 2013, the 918 code was expanded to include the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.

The 918 code is expected to be exhausted by 2019. In preparation for this, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission is considering a proposal to split the 918 code into two separate area codes.

Area code 918 serves the northeastern corner of Oklahoma. It was created on July 1, 1996, in a split of area code 405. 918 originally covered Tulsa and the surrounding area, but it has since been expanded to cover a large swath of northeastern Oklahoma.
