Area code 848 is one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947. It covers most of Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey. The 848 area code was originally assigned to the now-defunct Monmouth Telephone and Telegraph Company. The 848 area code has seen several changes over the years. It was originally split into two areas, 848 and 609. In 2001, area code 609 was divided and the 609 area code was assigned to the new area code. This left 848 as the only area code in the region.
In October 2017, the New Jersey State Board of Public Utilities announced that area code 848 was running out of numbers and would need to be split. This would be the third time 848 has been split. The first time was in 2001, when area code 609 was created. The second time was in 2016, when area code 732 was split.
The proposed split would create a new area code, 908, which would cover the northern part of the 848 region. The 908 area code would be assigned to the new area code area. The 848 area code would continue to cover the southern part of the region.
There is no set date for the 848/908 split, but it is expected to happen in 2019 or 2020. Until then, residents in the 848 area code will need to use both area codes when making calls.
Area code 848 is one of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) area codes, which covers New Jersey. Area code 848 serves the central and northern portions of New Jersey, including the cities of Newark, Jersey City, and Hoboken. The 848 area code was created on October 1, 1997, as a result of the split of area code 201.
