805 area code is one of the original area codes established in California in 1947. It originally covered the entire Central Coast from Santa Barbara to the Monterey Peninsula.In 1957, the southern portion of 805 was split off to create area code 213. In 1984, the northern portion of 805 was split off to create area code 408.

Today, 805 covers the coastal counties of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo, as well as the inland counties of Santa Clara, San Benito, and Monterey.

In 1957, most of the San Fernando Valley became area code 213, and the 805 code was reduced to its present size.
