Area code 779 was created on March 20, 2000. It is Illinois' first overlay area code. The area code covers the northern and western portions of the state, including the Chicago metropolitan area. Area code 779 was created to relieve congestion in area code 312. In the early 2000s, the 312 area code was becoming increasingly crowded. There were not enough phone numbers to go around, and businesses and residents were struggling to get telephone service.

In response to this, the Illinois General Assembly created area code 779. This new area code would overlay the 312 area code, and would be used for the northern and western portions of the state.
