Area code 740 was one of the original area codes established in 1947. It originally served the entire state of Ohio. In 1996, area code 614 was created to serve the Columbus metro area. This left area code 740 to serve the rural areas of Ohio.In 2006, area code 740 was split. The northern portion of the area code was assigned to area code 234. This left area code 740 to serve the southern portion of the state.

Today, area code 740 is Ohio's last remaining original area code. It is also one of the nation's longest-serving area codes.
