Area code 520 was created on March 19, 1996, and it was one of the original area codes established in Arizona. Initially, the 520 area code covered the Tucson metropolitan area. However, as the population in southern Arizona continued to grow, the 520 area code was extended to include Cochise County, Graham County, Greenlee County, and Santa Cruz County. The 520 area code is one of the few area codes in the United States that has not been divided or overlaid. This means that the 520 area code is still used in its original area, which includes Tucson and the surrounding areas.

In spite of its growth, the 520 area code has remained relatively stable over the years. The only significant change to the 520 area code was the addition of Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, and Santa Cruz Counties in 1997.

The 520 area code is scheduled to be exhausted in 2020. However, the Arizona Corporation Commission is currently considering a proposal to split the 520 area code and create a new area code for the southern part of the state. This new area code would be 602, and it would cover the Phoenix metropolitan area.

If this proposal is approved, the 520 area code would no longer be used in Tucson and the surrounding areas. Instead, the 602 area code would be used in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

520 serves the Tucson and Phoenix metropolitan areas. It was one of the original area codes in the North American Numbering Plan and it is the only area code in Arizona that is not served by an overlay.
