It was created to relieve congestion on area codes 214 and 972. 469 is a relatively new area code and has not seen the same level of growth as some of the other area codes in Texas.

It was created on November 1, 1996, as a split from area code 214.The 469 area code includes the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, as well as the Ellis and Navarro counties. The code was originally assigned to the northeastern quadrant of the Metroplex, but has since been gradually expanded to include portions of Dallas, Collin, Denton, Tarrant, and Rockwall counties.

The 469 area code is unusual in that it is one of the few area codes in the United States that has not been overlaid with an additional area code.
