Area code 440 is one of the original area codes established in 1947. It covers the northeastern corner of Ohio, including Cleveland and its suburbs.The 440 area code was assigned to northeastern Ohio in 1947. At that time, Cleveland was the state's largest city and its only major metropolitan area. The 440 code was largely rural and sparsely populated until the late 1950s, when the Cleveland area's population began to grow rapidly.

In 1959, the Cleveland area's first four-digit area code, 216, was created to handle the growing demand for telephone service. The 440 code remained in use for the rural areas of northeastern Ohio.

In 1996, the 440 code was split to create the new 234 area code for the Cleveland suburbs. The 440 code was left with the rural areas of northeastern Ohio.

Today, the 440 code is still in use for the rural areas of northeastern Ohio. It is one of the few original area codes that has not been split or overlaid with a new code.
