Area code 424 was first put into service on January 25, 1997. It was created as a split from area code 310. The 424 area code includes the Westside of Los Angeles, the South Bay, and the Santa Monica Mountains. The 424 area code has been the subject of some controversy. Its creation was opposed by many residents in the 310 area code. They felt that it would lead to increased confusion and higher calling rates. However, the 424 area code has been a success, and its popularity has only grown over the years.

The CPUC's decision to establish an overlay for area code 424 was made in an effort to deal with the growing demand for phone numbers in the region. Over the past decade, the population of the 424 area code has grown by more than 20 percent.

Today, area code 424 serves the regions of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. It is also overlaid by area code 747, which covers the regions of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties.
