Area code 410 is one of the original area codes established in 1947. It served the entire state of Maryland. In 1991, area code 443 was created to serve the Baltimore metropolitan area. Area code 410 was split, and the western portion of the state retained area code 410. In 1997, area code 410 was reduced to its current size when area code 410 was split again, and the eastern portion of the state was served by area code 443.

Area code 410 serves the southeastern corner of the state of Maryland. It encompasses the City of Baltimore and the surrounding suburbs.
