For those of you who are unaware, area code 404 is the area code assigned to the city of Atlanta, Georgia.The 404 area code was first assigned to the city of Atlanta in 1947. At the time, Atlanta was a much smaller city than it is today, and the 404 area code was able to accommodate the city's population. However, as Atlanta began to grow, the 404 area code soon became too small.

In 1995, area code 770 was created to serve the Atlanta metropolitan area. This area code covered the same geographic area as the 404 area code, but it had a larger population. As a result, the 404 area code was retired and the 770 area code became the new area code for Atlanta.
