Area code 318 was created on November 1, 1997, and it originally served the Shreveport and Bossier City area. In its early days, area code 318 was plagued with problems. Area code 318 was originally overlayed on area code 318, and this resulted in a lot of confusion for residents and businesses.

In 2004, however, area code 318 was split, and the northern portion of the region was assigned area code 741. This helped to alleviate some of the problems that were caused by the overlay.

Today, area code 318 is still in use, and it continues to serve the Shreveport and Bossier City area.
