Area code 269 was one of the original area codes established in 1947. It served most of southwestern Michigan, including the cities of Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. However, over time, the population of southwestern Michigan grew while the population of the other parts of the state declined. This led to the creation of area code 616, which took over the southwestern portion of the state in 1999. Area code 269 is now used for a small portion of the state near the Indiana border.

269 is a Michigan area code which serves the southwestern region of the state. Cities and towns in the 269 area code include Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Coldwater, Holland, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph. The 269 area code was created on July 1, 1994, as a split from the 269 area code. 269 originally covered the entire southwestern region of Michigan. However, in 1996, the 269 area code was split again, creating the 616 area code. This split left the western portion of the 269 area code (including Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, and Holland) in the 616 area code, while the eastern portion of the 269 area code (including Kalamazoo and St. Joseph) remained in the 269 area code.

The 269 area code is expected to run out of phone numbers by 2021. In anticipation of this, the Michigan Public Service Commission has proposed a new area code, 989, for the southwestern region of Michigan. If approved, the 989 area code would be implemented in early 2020.
