The history of area code 262 is a little bit complicated. When the area code was created, it was actually a split of area code 414. Area code 414 covered the western half of Milwaukee County, while area code 262 covered the eastern half.

However, over time, the eastern half of Milwaukee County began to grow, and it eventually became clear that 262 was too small to cover the whole area. In 2009, the 262 area code was split again, with the western half moving to area code 414 and the eastern half becoming area code 262.

Today, area code 262 is one of the fastest-growing area codes in the United States. It’s projected to run out of phone numbers by 2020, so a new area code will likely be needed soon.
