Area code 253 is one of the original area codes established in 1947. It originally served the western side of Washington state, including the Seattle metropolitan area. In 1995, area code 206 was split off from 253, leaving 253 to serve the eastern side of the state.Over the years, 253 has been home to a number of memorable events. In 1957, Elvis Presley made his debut appearance in Seattle at the Seattle Center Coliseum, which was then known as the Washington Coliseum. In 1967, riots broke out in the University District of Seattle following the shooting of a black man by police. In 1995, the Seattle Mariners made it to the playoffs for the first time in history, and in 2001, they made it all the way to the World Series.

Today, area code 253 is still in use and continues to serve the eastern side of Washington state. Although its boundaries have changed over the years, it remains an important part of Washington's telecommunications infrastructure.

Area code 253 serves the southwestern part of Washington state, including the Seattle metropolitan area. It was created in 1997 as a split from area code 206.
